Buckingham Palace
London
Serving as the administrative headquarters and London residence of Her Majesty the
Queen, Buckingham Palace is one of only a few working royal palaces remaining in
the world today. Situated in the City of Westminster, London, Buckingham Palace
is a hugely popular London tourist attraction and symbol of London.
Home of the Queen and Prince Philip, Queen Victoria was the first monarch to take
up residence at Buckingham Palace in 1837 after the architect John Nash transformed
it from Buckingham House into a palace. It was previously known as Buckingham House.
As part of the alterations, Marble Arch, which was originally the entrance to the
palace, was moved to a new position at the corner of Hyde Park where it lies today.
Only open to the public during the summer months, while the Queen is staying at
her Scottish castle Balmoral, visitors can tour the nineteen magnificent State Rooms
which form the heart of the Palace. These rooms feature some of the greatest treasures
from the Royal Collection, including paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens and Canaletto
and sculpture by Canova.
The ticket booth is situated across the road from the Palace and opens at 9.45am.
Outside you can see the Foot Guards from the Household Division in their distinctive
red tunics and black bearskins on guard duty outside the palace daily. The Changing
of the Guard ceremony now takes place every other day in the winter but it is still
daily in the summer months.
Opening Times
26th July to 24th Sept
9.45am - 18.00pm
