Getting Around London
Wondering how you are going to navigate the city? Want to know the best way to get
around? Read our quick quide to getting around London.
Car Hire in London
Traffic in London can be very heavy and driving in the Capital stressful, so where
able taking public transport such as an underground train, cycling or walking is
a better alternative. However the added flexibility that a car offers such as visiting
some of the tourist attractions just outside of London, make hiring a car an attractive
option.
The Congestion Zone
If you plan to drive in central London then you need to be aware of the daily congestion
zone charge. The congestion charge is a £8 daily charge to drive in central
London between 07:00 and 18:00, Monday to Friday excluding Public Holidays. It's
designed to reduce traffic and raise money to improve transport in London.
Trams in London
Trams are new to London and currently there are only 3 routes serving Croydon and
South London. Running every 10 minutes or so during the day, trams are a quick and
easy way to travel around certain areas and although they don't travel directly
through central London, but most stop at Wimbledon, so you can easily take a tube
or bus from there to your destination.
Cycling in London
Cycling is an ideal way to get around London and also a great fun and healthy leisure
activity with many routes and ideal places to cycle in London. A 20-minute bike
ride will burn off a whole pack of wine gums and it is recommended to ride a bike
for 20 to 30 minutes three times a week to achieve the minimum level of weekly physical
activity. Cycling is a flexible and low cost way to view the many London tourist
attractions.
Walking in London
Walking is the best way to get around the crowded streets of London, especially
when shopping. Walking is a healthy activity and of course is free, and as many
of London's tourist attractions are within walking distance, is a good way of sight-seeing.
There are plenty of designated walking routes which are great when the weather is
nice, the London parks, and searching for the small Blue Plaques around London is
a great walking activity.
