This famous abbey in Westminster, situated near to the House of Parliament, is the place of the coronation, marriage and burial of British monarchs and has been since 1066. Its formal name is actually 'The Collegiate Church of St Peter, Westminster' but is known by the popular title of 'Westminster Abbey'.
The present building dates mainly from the thirteenth to sixteenth centuries and is steeped in British history. With a Gothic mixture of styles, the current building was started in 1245 and has many interesting features such as the titled floor in the Chapter House dating to the 13th century and the organ built in 1937. Every year Westminster Abbey welcomes over one million visitors, many to worship at the daily services, and many to see the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Royal Tombs and the Shrine of Edward the Confessor, the Coronation Chair, Lady Chapel and the Royal Chapels.
Over 3,000 people are buried in the Church and Cloisters and there are over 600 monuments and memorials. There are audio guides available in eight languages as well as a highly-popular verger-led tour.
