Having previously hosted the Olympic Games in 1948 and before that in 1908, London became the first city to officially host the modern Olympic Games three times when the 2012 Summer Olympic Games came to London between 27 July to 12 August 2012.
There were 26 sports and a total of 39 disciplines which took place at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. The sports are: Aquatics, Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Canoeing, Cycling, Equestrian, Fencing, Football, Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Modern pentathlon, Rowing, Sailing, Shooting, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Triathlon, Volleyball, Weightlifting and Wrestling.
London 2012 Olympics Venues
New permanent and temporary facilities were constructed specially for the Summer Olympic Games. Olympic Park is a 3 arena sporting complex in Stratford, East London. The main focal point of the Summer Olympic Games was the 80,000 capacity London Olympic Stadium. Undergoing construction in Stratford, the stadium has been designed as a temporary stadium with the capacity to be reduced after the Olympic Games finish and features such as the roof and seats to be used elsewhere.
